According to a recent report by the World Health Organization, 4 out of every 5 children aged 11 to 17 worldwide are not getting the amount of exercise needed for a healthy lifestyle.

This is the first review of its kind conducted by the WHO, which shows that children’s mental development and social skills are being affected by a lack of adequate exercise.

The report says that the problem of not getting the recommended one hour of exercise exists in both poor and rich countries.

Exercise and Gender Differences

The World Health Organization conducted this review in 146 countries. Of these, there are four countries where girls exercise more than boys, including Tonga, Samoa, Afghanistan and Zambia. In the remaining 142 countries, boys exercise more than girls.

According to the study, Bangladeshi children are at the forefront of exercise, but even there, 66 percent of children do not exercise for an hour. Boys in the Philippines (93 percent) and girls in South Korea (97 percent) are exercising the least.

In the UK, 75 percent of boys and 85 percent of girls do not exercise up to the recommended target. According to the study, globally, 85 percent of girls are not able to do the recommended exercise and 78 percent of boys are not able to do so.

Furthermore, according to the World Health Organization: “Healthy children are more likely to become healthy adults. And over their lifetime, they are less likely to develop heart disease and diabetes. There is also growing evidence that exercise is important for mental development. They learn better, behave better socially, and have sharper minds.”

Reasons for the Trend of Low Exercise Among Young People

According to experts, whether or not to exercise is actually a matter of preference. The World Health Organization’s review did not include reasons for low exercise, but some things seem common.

One reason is the focus on academic performance over physical health. “Children at this age are often told to focus on studies,” says Leanne Ryley, one of the report’s authors. “They often spend a large part of their day sitting and reading, so they have fewer opportunities to exercise.”

The researchers also say that concerns have also been raised about the safety, accessibility and affordability of sports facilities. In addition, dangerous roads mean that cycling or walking to a friend’s house or school is no longer an option.

According to researchers, one reason for the lack of exercise among young people is the prevalence of smart gadgets. With video games, entertainment on phones, tablets, or computers, children are not able to find time for exercise.
